About Stord Tennis Club
STK was established in 1980 at Vikahaugane in Stord, close to the school and sports area already there and developed later. During the '80s two hard courts were ready, a club house was built and in the '90s Rackethallen came about as a joint project of several racquet sports and the municipality. In 2005/06 the courts were refitted with a softer coating.
Principally a local club, we have had some success also on the regional and national levels, mainly among juniors. Playing recreationally is the main activity, tennis being an additional sports to many people. We try to arrange local tournaments but it's not so easy given the weather conditions, even in the summer.
Membership has varied a lot, from the heydays of the '80 with some 150 members to a low in the late '90 with 30 to 40 paying members. In recent years we've had some 50 to 60 members per year.
We've worked hard to get our own tennis hall during the past 5-6 years, but so far with little success. Stord kommune owns the property and seems less interested in helping us get a hall than making it hard for us. We may even lose our existing courts, although not in the short run.
